Fifteen-year-old April Somerfield is a shy, self-loathing misfit who would blend in with the wallpaper, if only the wallpaper were a little less attractive. In a family line of gorgeous, successful women, April’s a fluke. At Prescott High School, she’s a walking punch line. A school project sends April on the hunt for her mother’s mysteriously missing yearbooks, and upon finding them she uncovers a big secret. It turns out that being “hit with an ugly stick” is a surprisingly literal occurrence in April’s family tree—a curse has been passed down from mother to daughter for centuries. But when April sees a chance to finally ditch the family curse, she must decide if becoming beautiful on the outside is worth giving up the person she is meant to be.

I received a free kindle copy of Ugly Stick by Joy Givens, published by Tributaries Press in an Amazon promotion in exchange for a fair review. I gave it five stars.

This young adult novel about an ugly stick curse was very entertaining & I enjoyed it. I will look for more of Joy Given's work.

April Somerfield joined the Yearbook committee. At the first meeting she described the group agreeing with the committee chair Vivienne. "We all nodded like obedient little bobble-heads dolls."

April's mother is beautiful & can wear anything & make it look good. She & April are clothes shopping. “April, you need to ease up on these self insults. Really. Others will ultimately see you in the way you see yourself.”

April's family history: "Over the next week, Rogelia transformed, until she was scarcely recognizable. Her skin grew mottled and her hair ratty, and the baby weight spread throughout her entire body. In seven days she went from the beauty of the province to a sideshow with a newborn. Townspeople pointed, stared, even laughed. Rogelia had been so arrogant towards them that many thought she had gotten her comeuppance."

Nine generations of women passed along thee family curse. "I would not have passed this curse on to you if the grief were not outweighed tenfold by the joyous outcome…”

April made an enemy of Vivienne. She had detention with her & described it like this: "A ninety-minute staring match with her sounded about as much fun as releasing a piranha in my bathtub."

Can April overcome the curse? Can she become beautiful inside first?

Ugly Stick Joy Givens 9780988777125 Books Reviews

This is supposed to be a book for young adults, and I'm not really young any more but I absolutely loved it. I would recommend it for any age. The author truly brings all the characters to life. April and Ani are so lovable. Everyone should have a bff like Ani. There is never a dull moment in the story. I literally could not put it down. The curse may be a fantasy but the lessons learned are real. Everyone has a 'mean girl' moment every now and then, and this story reminds us to think about how much pain our remarks can cause others while keeping us entertained and in suspense as to how April will handle the mess she gets herself into.
I enjoyed this book not only for the flashback to high school, but also for the empowering message it sends to the younger readers. April struggles with real feelings, and I think the author gives the reader a very authentic window into the mind of a teenaged girl. The supporting cast never felt forced and provided for a brilliant background from which to build a story. Bravo!
Since so many people have done it better than me, I will refrain from re-hashing the basic plot, and stick to my impressions.

Ugly Stick for me starts out wonderfully, fleshing out April's life, the other main characters, and their surroundings in a way that gives you all the info you needed without getting needlessly nitty-gritty. The curse, while originally seeming a little cliched, became unique in how it was passed on and later resolved.

The negative for me has got to be that April's voice slowly throughout the novel become less distinct, and a bit more like generic teenaged whingings. Also, since I personally abhor Twitter, what for many reviewers was a cute use of it in-book and admittedly well-done, became a bit obnoxious to me.

The ending was handled well, and felt more like the beginning of the book than the middle, and I love how the curse was handled.

All-in-all though I have to say I very much enjoyed this book, and really look forward to seeing more from the author!
With so many young adult books set in a post-apocalyptic/dystopian United States, it was incredibly refreshing to read a story in a more common (albeit challenging) setting high school. It is easy for the reader to sympathizes with April, a misfit who wants nothing more to remain unnoticed by the twitter bullies. Givens provides more than just a tale of high school woes; she integrates a fantastic SyFy twist that drives the plot on. This is just the kind of story so many young women need to help them get through the trials of high school and become confident—even if they haven’t been hit with an ugly stick curse. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!
I read this, and enjoyed it, but I won't ever want to reread it.

The first part sets up the premise our adolescent heroine has been cursed by an actual ugly stick, passed down from mother to daughter for generations. (Givens telegraphs this, so the reader gets it long before the character does.)

Then, after discovering this, she takes control of her life. Naturally, things don't go as expected. I thought this part was pretty well done, though predictable. (The impossibly handsome boy falling for her was a bit of a stretch, but I was willing to roll with it.)

But the last part of the novel, where everything gets resolved and they all learn valuable lessons -- that stank of "after-school special". It was just too sweetness-and-light to be believable, even after suspending disbelief to accept the existence of the curse. "They all lived happily ever after" is a time-honored conclusion to fairy tales, but that's one sentence, not page after page. The author shows potential -- as I say, the first maybe 80% of the book was much better than the ending -- so she might want to think about either changing the direction of the ending to make it less clichéd, or else shortening it drastically.
